10 Health & Fitness Reminders You Might Need To Hear Today
Lets keep this intro short and sweet… I know just how hard some of you are on yourselves and how easy it is to get into your own head. So here are 10 reminders regarding health and fitness you might just need to hear today.
1. Fuel Your Body… Always
I’m here to remind you of the sobering thought that even if you woke up and lay in bed for the entire day your body would still need a significant amount of energy to keep you alive and kicking (or sleeping in this scenario).
I know it’s tempting to think that if you haven’t smashed a workout session or you reach the end of the day sat at your desk that you don’t ‘deserve’ to eat but remember, food is fuel and your body needs fuel to keep going. Prioritise getting in balanced meals and giving your body the energy it needs to continue being awesome!
2. Exercise Is Movement, Keep It Simple
Ahhhh, the infamous questions. What exercises are best? What should you be doing? What will yield the best results? The list goes on…
Here’s the thing; exercise in simple terms is movement. It doesn’t ‘need’ to be anything and it certainly doesn’t need to be overly complicated. Try to lean into the types of movement that bring you happiness or feel good for you. Dancing to geat music, getting sweaty in a gym class, following a program, going for a short walk, finally reaching that next level of Beatsaber… (just me 👀). Unless you’re pursuing a very specific fitness goal, anything goes really so stop overthinking it.
3. Stop Being A Hater
Yes, I see you.
I see you out there punishing yourself for a ‘bad’ day of eating or ‘falling off the wagon’ (one of my most hated phrases 🤢). What these situations are more commonly referred to are just living life.
If we are in a constant state of ‘good’ vs ‘bad’, or ‘on’ vs ‘off’ it ultimately leads to one place, a one way ticket to yo-yo town. A place no one wants to visit. Instead of over restricting to make up for a self diagnosed failure focus on balance. Drink some water, get some sleep, move a little, fuel up and spend time with someone who makes you feel like the best version of you - connection is underrated!
4. Address the Root, Not Just the Surface
This is a biggie and focuses more on the bigger picture in life. It’s often the case that we will usually focus on fixing the symptoms and neglect to consider the cause.
As a coach, I urge clients to delve deeper than the surface and think about what is causing some of the behaviours they want to change. Could it be that you’re working too many hours in an overly stressful job? Could it be that the people around you are constantly filling your head with negativity? Are you in an unhappy, sexless, loveless relationship? Do you feel you have no purpose?
Taking time to question this and then putting actions in place to start changing those things are ultimately what will be the game changer so don’t forget to delve a little deeper!
5. Life Happens And That’s Ok
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. Rather than viewing disruptions as setbacks, acknowledge them a regular part of the journey, a bit like the waves in the ocean. Sometimes you’re up and everything is great and sometimes you’re low and it all feels a bit hopeless, for the most part hopefully you’re somewhere in the middle.
Embracing life's ebbs and flows as a normal part of life rather than resisting them makes everything 10x easier. TLDR: Normalise fluctuations, it’s normal, it’s ok!
6. Progress Is Not Linear
I know, I know. You’ve probably heard this a trillion times.
So why do we still find it so hard to accept that day to day we might not see the progress that we expect but over a longer period of time the progress is there. Why do we focus on the small when the bigger picture is so much more important.
Well the answer to that is because we are human. When you are putting so much energy into eating a certain way, moving more, self development, building a business - whatever it may be, you want to see the fruits of your labour.
Two things become important here, patience and trust. Trust the process and be patient. In the meantime remember that progress comes in many forms so celebrate the small wins and keep your head in the game, you’ve got this!
7. Welcome Changing Goals
Your journey isn't set in stone. As you evolve, your goals might shift. Embrace these transformations as opportunities for growth, this is personal development at it’s finest and that’s exactly what we want. How boring would a life of the same shit, different day be!
Your life will change, your motivations will change… you will change and we wouldn’t want it any other way so welcome those changing goals and go and chase them!
8. Not Every Setback Needs A Narrative
It seems a part of human nature to dwell on the past and find justifications for every little setback. For once, I’ll be the barer of good news, you don’t have to. Let it go, just let it go!
One of my favourite quotes says ‘no amount of guilt will change the past, no amount of anxiety will change the future, so focus on now’ and that perfectly sums up this point. Stop living in the past and instead focus on what you’re doing right now, today and go smash it.
9. Enjoy The Process
The true joy lies in the process, not just the destination. I’m almost giving myself the ick just saying it but it really is true.
Sorry to be the barer of bad news once more but once you reach your goal (you absolute bosses 💪🏻), your goalpost will just move. It will either just get further away or completely change and when you reach this point you will realise just how much you valued and enjoyed the process. It’s the little things you’ve done along the way, the mundane and repetitive things that you will look back on and smile so cherish the present and don’t wish your time away!
10. Learning Unfolds Through Action
Trust me, I know how absolutely terrifying it is to take that first step. I’ve felt it so many times in my life whether it be moving half way across the world at 18, starting the journey that led me to losing 30kgs, changing careers or starting my own business, that stuff is scary!
You will never have all the answers or all the knowledge before you start and by constantly striving to have all the information before you start is procrastination at its finest. When you start, you will feel uncertain. But remember, learning takes place in the doing. Embrace the journey, experiment, and watch how quickly you gather knowledge and confidence.
Taking that first step is the hardest but there is only one way to truly start and that is by gritting your teeth, baring it and just starting - you’ve got this!
TLDR:
In the whirlwind of health and fitness advice, these reminders are simply that… reminders. I know that we mostly know these things but as the hyper critical humans we are we often get lost in the black hole of health and fitness and can easily forget how normal we are!
The chances are that you are probably being wayyyy too hard on yourself and so my leaving reminder is to stop being so hard on yourself. You’re doing awesome! 💫
Be kind to yourselves out there! x
